What is Ken Robinson's message?

In the video, “Changing Education Paradigms,” Ken Robinson message portraits public education as a failure system because it tried to reform public education of these present times with unproductive strategies that were done in past or in century’s ego.  Past educational structures are not competent or compatible with the present time and it is crucial for an educational reformation.   Public education is base on the academic perform of a student.  This method harm many children that were intelligent too just because they did not fall into the category of performing well academically, but none academic. Those that perform well academically they go to school work hard and earn a degree in college were ready to get a job.  However today this system cannot be base on economy and for that reason student are not interested in obtain a degree because this system have fail them.

These methods harm many children that were intelligent also, but just because they did not fit into the category of performing well academically, so they fit into the category of none academic. Those who perform well academically, they went to school, worked hard and earned a college degree and were able to get a job. However, today this system of public education that is base on economy is not working anymore. Therefore, students have not interesting in obtaining a college degree because when they finish there are not jobs available.

I agree with Mr. Robinson opinion, because the education system obsolete and should be reform or structure not only in the academic performing, but also on the aptitude to solve real problems in life and support creative thinking. The connection that I found in my observation that support Mr. Robinsons’ video is that student are grouping by age. Also, students have fallow a schedule and the some children are focused more than other.

Ken Robinson's Changing Education Paradigms message is that today's schooling is outdated and America's educational message to students is not believable anymore. When our parents went to school they were told that if they worked hard, did well, got a college degree, then they would get a good job but today's kids aren't buying that message anymore. Robinson also states that the ADHD epidemic that the U.S. broadcasts is not an epidemic at all. It is as fictitious as saying school for students nowadays is fun and stimulating. Robinson's final message is that schools are still being run as factory lines and have not revolutionized along with America and has basically been stuck in place. I agree with Robinson's message because as a student and as a person sitting in on classroom lessons the things we are learning in school are boring and make it very hard to concentrate. My mind wonders off during these three hour lectures numerous times  and i find it difficult to recount half the things I was told. I can only imagine how a 7 or 8 year old feels when they are practically forced to listen to 6 hour lectures everyday then are expected to go home and spend an additional 1-2 hours doing homework on something that drove them mentally insane for the past 6 hours. I liked everything about the Ted Talk. Robinson used illustrations along with words to get his point across and he also threw in a few jokes along the way that kept the listener interested. He stimulated multiple senses of the mind and it made it easier to follow and understand what he was trying to say.

In "Changing Education Paradigms" video by Ken Robinson he speaks about how children are being taught the way they were taught 100 years ago, and it becoming a problem. I totally agree with Robinson, the education system needs to be reformed so that children in the modern world can learn without being labeled. Over the past year I have learned that there is many different ways to teach a child, there isn't any set way that a child must learn. Everyone child learns different and at a different pace, and the structure in which they teach now is not interesting to the children today. Most children in school feel like education is boring and do not look forward to attending school, and we can not blame them. It can be difficult at a young age to get distracted when learning things that do not interest you. Some teachers that received their degrees and certifications many years ago have a "set" way of teaching and are not open to trying to make the lesson interesting. Imagine having a teacher sit in front of the classroom at her desk and read from a paper an expecting you to memorize and comprehend everything he/she is saying. I know for sure I would definitely become bored. 
Also the education system quickly label students as having ADHD. Robinson speak about the medication they prescribe to these children and how it turn them into zombies. I feel that no child should be labeled because that only restricts the child more over the years. 

In “Changing the Paradigm” Ted Robinson expounded on how the current education system strategies are ineffective and outdated. The ways of education today depends on the education strategies from the past which are not compatible. Previously students had a predetermined schedule of life. They would go to school, work hard, go to college and then get a job. Unfortunately in the economy now, this saying is no longer valid. It is becoming common for people to get a degree and not be able to get a job swiftly, and the children take notice. The children do not want to be involved in school if they cannot reap enough benefits from it as soon as they graduate.  This leads to distractions in and outside of the classroom. When some of these students seemed to be more distracted than others it is considered ADHD. Robinson mentions the idea if ADHD and how it is dealt with.

 Students are being diagnosed with this condition and being treated in a deadening way. The medication that are used to “help” these children turn their focus from the entertainment they prefer to the old basis of learning, is dangerous and ineffective to the learning abilities of these students. Young children who minds are not fully developed and would not be able to sit or focus for a long period of time regardless of whether they are in a school setting or not are given these heavy drugs. Instead of figuring out ways for students to become more engaged in the lessons, they subsequently lose interest and drive to learn in class due to these mind numbing drugs.

Robinson feels the standard way of grouping students judged by their age and not capabilities is not beneficial. In a sensitive setting such as education every child is different. Some have special requirements such as how well they work with others and how many people they can work with and others do not. Robinson does not think they should separate students from a whole but they should collaborate with students who share the same capabilities regardless of age. Personally, grouping children by their age is not completely unsuccessful because children can be influenced by their academically advanced peers to do better. If children, teenagers and adults are mixed, it can be discouraging for the older students to be in the same learning level as a child that is six years younger than them.

 

As I work on my observations in class it is common that some children are more focused than others at times. It is also common to see children not fully understanding certain lessons. The biggest issue that I see in the classrooms are the time schedules. Each day it is required that students go over a number of subjects in a strict time schedule which does not allow the students or the teachers to be able to work together in each subject fully. In what I learned from Robinson is that the education system is conceived in an unnatural state. The children are grouped by one single factor which is age, those who are not able to focus on uninteresting topics to them must be treated and overall individualism is not recognized and used to grouping abilities.

Ken Robinson's video Changing Education Paradigms, explains how schools are not up to date with their education and how society and the government don't do enough to encourage their young children and adults into using the capability of their minds. Schools still follow a certain standard they did hundreds and hundreds of years ago and that should change as well as people do, economy, technology and time changes.

I agree with Robinson because the education has changed so much over the years the new way of learning should be applied. Also because I believe a person at this time does not have to go to college of finish it in order to have a job or a stable position. It does look good in a resume but it's not as necessary anymore as it was before. One of the most important things to me from Robinson's talk is when he states how we are getting our children through education by anesthetizing them when instead we should be waking them up to what they can be capable of and their full potential. He explained this very well connecting it to ADHD and the current percentage in the United States.

However, one thing I liked about Robinson's talk and the video is how illustrative and detailed he is when trying to explain an issue. Something that I also liked from his talk his how he points out how schools and classrooms are separated by age group as if the time we were born mattered, when what should really matter is our knowledge and the type of education is being given and learned. 

Connecting his talk to my observations I noticed that students/children receive special treatment according to their development or actions. I believe every student or child should be treated equally. We as adults are contributing into closing their minds by not letting them experiment on their own and be open minded like the rest of the students.

In the video, Mr. Robinson says, "We are educating people out of their creativity." It's a message with deep resonance. Schools try to teach students as they taught 100 years ago. Students need an education connected with reality. The perspective of the Education system is how teachers support each individual child by engaging, creating fun and positive lesson. Mr. Robinson gives a lot of positive feedbacks such as teaching the child that he or she should have a more divergent thinking, teachers should support each child individually or in smaller groups, and teachers should give more creating activities to keep them focused and interested.

I agree with Robinson’s message because the education system is definitely outdated and needs quite a bit of change. There is too much focus on these ridiculous standardize tests and not enough on engaging students. Everyone is unique in their own way and adapt and learn differently. That is why there is a thing called “steps.” Meaning there is more than one way to learn a topic and it depends on the child, which is best for them. Students should be able to have the freedom to explore their creativity and interest in life, not a system to robotically decide what they should and should not be.

What I liked about Robinson's talk was the visuals in his videos and examples he used to break down the education system. Also how he discussed and described ADHD and divergent thinking data of 3 different age groups.

In connection to my observations, I see how schools resemble a factory. In the school I observe, students must meet certain requirements especially on these tests and running records. If they don’t meet the criteria they are automatically categorized as a “special needs” student and/or have an IEP. I see the teachers struggling to teach the students different lessons under the required time. It is about that time for the board of education to take some responsibility for their industrialized system and stop blaming teachers and students. 

The video “Changing Education Paradigm” by Ken Robinson expressed that the educational system should change its paradigm as the clip is titled. Educators and instructors should acknowledge that we must raise the educational standards. The education system need to change their outdated conception of academics and bring forth and more effective an efficient method of education our children. Instead of focusing on standardization the focus should lean more on divergent thinking. This form of thinking enables an essential capacity for creative learning. Teacher should support each child individually and give more room for creative activities and instructions.

I definitely agree with Robinson’s message. I believe that there must be a dramatic change in the educational field. A system that can improve and prepare students to work effectively. As stated in his message, developing a form to educate children to take a place in the economies and teach children how to pass cultural identity.

  

In connection to my observation working in the educational field as a paraprofessional and I have been given the opportunity to work directly with children in teacher in classroom settings. Not only that but have form part of many curriculum team and seen the development for how a child are expected to be instructed and personally I disagree. Every child is different and all learn different and these common core and standardization leave no room for creative learning and exploring different way for academic approach.

In the video, “Changing Education Paradigms” Ken Robison emphasizes that thought out time it has being establish that getting an education leads to a better economic for yourself; however, this doesn’t seem to be true anymore. The education system is more like a chain: work hard, do well, college, good job, but kids do not believe that anymore, which often leads them to drop out. Having a college degree does not really guarantee that you’ll have a good job. The system of education is designed and structured. The public education system was designed in the industrial revolution years, so it turned out to actually just focus on academic performance. Further, Robison states that the education system often marginalize and alienate students and most of them struggle to keep their cultural identity while trying to be part of “globalization”.

 In the video, one of the messages that stands out the most was when Robison emphasizes on ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). He argues that kids are being medicated for this disorder which is actually harming their learning capacity. These medicines are harming the kid’s creativity by making them more like “zombies”.  This point made by Robison I believe was the most important, because most people are blind to these kind of things. Parents as well as teacher follow the standards assigned by society and the education system because “that’s how is supposed to be”, but with this we are actually harming our kids. Robison made a good point when speaking about this specific topic, it gave me a whole new perspective on how I think about this particular disorder and disabilities as a whole.

I agree with Robison’s opinion that the education system needs a thorough reform. I believe that education should encourage creative thinking and focus more on the ability to solve real problems, not only academics. I also agree with his point on kids being labeled with ADHD because as he says “ we are getting our children through education by anesthetizing them, but what we should be doing is waking them up to what is inside of themselves”.

Ken Robinson’s video on “Changing Education Paradigms,”   proves to me that we have to raise education standards. Robinson thinks that we aren’t allowing children to grow, we are stifling them by telling them there is only one way to do things. The way it has always been done. Robinson implies that the school is like a factory with a production line mentality. We run everything based on timing and schedule and we are causing students to conform to society’s way of operating. Schools are presenting students with different material every semester and expect them to grasp everything within that time to excel at standardized testing, forgetting that all children learn differently and at slower paces than others. Education is modeled on the interests of industrialization and the image of it.

I agree with Robinson’s view on technology. He blames the over stimulating nature of electronic devices for making classroom lessons seem boring to a child. We are giving children unlimited access to technology and get mad at them for “living” off of their devices. Instead of enriching the minds of our children, we are numbing them with anesthetics. He attributes ADHD to technology as well. Robinson doesn't believe that it is an epidemic and instead of labeling children we need to look at classroom structure. While doing my observations I also noticed that when classroom time is split up wisely and children are given “fun” activities throughout the day, they are happier and show more interest in learning.  

I also like how the message is presented; he provides graphics for his listeners to connect more with the message. The visual effects provided clarity and captivated my attention throughout the video. I now view the educational system differently and understand that change is necessary for something to grow and be successful.

Based on my understanding of the video “changing Education paradigms “ by Ken Robinson’s. It helped me to comprehend his perspective of the Education system and how can teachers support each individual child by engaging and creating fun and positive learning lesson plan. Also he gives a lot of positive feedbacks such as teaching the child that he or she should have a more divergent thinking, teachers should support each child individually, teachers should give more creating activities. Teachers should be stop  “old fashion” and starting being more creative and cheerful. Also give the child the opportunity to take the initiative in many activities.

I agree with Robinson’s message because the education system is being awareness about the necessity of each student. Also the system is changing and improving the preparation of the students so they can be more productive and efficiency. I believe that most children learn differently and have a different learning style.

The presentation is very professional and objective. The most important parts of Robison’s discussion that I found interesting were when he said that teachers classify copying as student cheating but in the outside world that’s more like collaboration. It capture my attention how he said that because in many ways is true. I can say that even as a grow up when the professor gives us a research paper individually, I struggle more than perhaps maybe working with a group, by each giving each others ideas and opinions.

In connection to my observation, I was able to see the teacher sets very high expectations for her students and provide the structure for them to excel. One to one teacher assistance, close proximity and hurdle help for students need extra support (during whole group lesson). Using of pictures, models, visuals and tactile materials. The teacher is great maintaining a good environment and keeping the students engaged, she is very animated when talking to the children. I observed that she uses visual, auditory and kinesthetic strategies for they learning. I believe the teachers are very important part in the student’s educational life.

  Ken Robinson’s video “Changing Education Paradigms” was quite interesting. In this video, he explained how our current school system is outdated and doesn’t fully benefit all of the students. Robinson believes that our education system is modeled in the interest and image of industrialization. He believes that instead of standardization, we should focus on divergent thinking. Divergent thinking is an essential capacity for creativity; it is the ability to see lots of possible answers to a question. He spoke about a longitudinal study on children which focused on divergent thinking. It showed that we are all born with this capacity and as we get older it deteriorates. They found that the reason for this is that those kids became educated. They spent years in school being told that there is only one answer and so they slowly lost that ability.

  

  I agree with Robinson’s video and his message. I think that our educational system is definitely outdated and needs to change. I think that too much focus in put on standardize tests and not enough on engaging students. I think that students shouldn’t be treated as part of an assembly line. Everyone is different and unique in their own way and they shouldn’t be molded to fit into a box. I also found the study that was conducted on divergent thinking to be eye opening. It’s proof that our current educational system isn’t benefiting us to its full capacity.

I can see the teachers struggling to teach different lessons under the required time. They have so many rules and guidelines to follow and I think that a lot of the time, it gets in the way of the students actually learning.  I believe that it’s time for the board of education to take some responsibility for their industrialized system instead of putting the blame on students and teachers.
